Is there a way to lurk in the discussions/groups, to see what was being discussed before joining? Additionally is there a way to take myself offline, become invisible while still on the site? Boy, do I sound crazy or what? Is this checking my spelling?

Yes, lurking allows one to view everything, but not participate. For instance, you can read everything, but in order to comment or download a resource, you must log in (join). As long as you are not logged in, no one can see you.
